چکیده
Spherical converging shock waves with incoming Mach number 1.18 are generated in a conical test chamber fitted to conventional square-section tube. A wave cutter is employed ensure proper transition from the square cylindrical straight pipe installed upstream of convergent section. The incident planar transformed into spherical by use an ellipsoidal membrane acting as gas lens separating two gases different densities. transmitted propagates within section, and accelerates towards apex. trajectory shape both characterized Mie scattering. follows similarity solution proposed Guderley (1942), whose agrees very well numerical simulation Chester-Chisnell-Whitham (CCW) theory for geometry considered. procedure demonstrated here provides potential method future investigations focusing Richtmyer–Meshkov instability geometry.

On converging shock waves of spherical and polyhedral form
The behaviour of converging spherical shock waves is considered using Whitham’s theory of geometrical shock dynamics. An analysis of converging shocks whose initial shape takes the form of regular polyhedra is presented. The analysis of this problem is motivated by the earlier work on converging cylindrical shocks discussed in Schwendeman & Whitham (1987). In that paper, exact solutions were re...
متن کاملNumerical Solution of Cylindrically Converging Shock Waves
Abstract—The cylindrically converging shock wave was numerically simulated by solving the Euler equations in cylindrical coordinates with TVD scheme and MUSCL [1] approach, using Roe's approximate Riemann solver [2] and super-bee nonlinear limiter [3]. The present study used the in house code developed for this purpose. The behavior of the solution in the vicinity of axis is investigated and ...
متن کاملOn cylindrically converging shock waves shaped by obstacles
Motivated by recent experiments, numerical simulations were performed of cylindrically converging shock waves. The converging shocks impinged upon a set of zero to sixteen regularly space obstacles. For more than two obstacles the resulting diffracted shock fronts formed polygonal shaped patterns near the point of focus. The maximum pressure and temperature as a function of number of obstacles ...
متن کاملSymmetry of spherically converging shock waves through reflection, relating to the shock ignition fusion energy scheme.
We examine the properties of perturbed spherically imploding shock waves in an ideal fluid through the collapse, bounce, and development into an outgoing shock wave. We find broad conservation of the size and shape of ingoing and outgoing perturbations when viewed at the same radius. The outgoing shock recovers the velocity of the unperturbed shock outside the strongly distorted core. The resul...

LLE Review, Volume 141 48 Introduction Shock ignition (SI)1–5 is an advanced concept in inertial confinement fusion (ICF)6 that is very promising and has the potential to provide significantly higher gains than conventional hot-spot ignition.7 SI is a two-step process where the fuel compression and ignition phases are separated by applying a highly shaped laser pulse with a duration of several ...
